TikTok increases the length of its largest video ever

When TikTok first launched in 2016, it was known for its 15-second videos. These videos are easy to use and great for quickly scrolling through applications. Soon after, TikTok increased the maximum video length to 60 seconds.

In July 2021, TikTok increased its maximum video length to three minutes. In February 2022, it started rolling out increased video lengths again. This time, the maximum length is 10 minutes.

So, is a 10-minute video too long for TikTok? The answer is…it depends.

In fact, not all videos need 10 minutes. In fact, most videos probably shouldn’t be 10 minutes long. But there are some videos that work well at this length.

For example, let’s say there is a 10-minute tutorial video. This video explains all the steps required to complete the task. Or imagine a vlog where creators spend 10 minutes talking about topics they are passionate about. These videos can be great on TikTok.

However, longer videos also come with some risks. First, people’s attention spans are limited. So a 10-minute video might be too long for some viewers.

Second, longer videos could make it harder for TikTok to maintain its identity. The app is known for its fast, bite-sized videos. If it starts uploading longer videos, people may start associating TikTok with long videos rather than short, quick videos.

Why is TikTok making a change?

A TikTok spokesperson said the company took the action because it was “always thinking about new ways to bring value to its community and enrich the TikTok experience” and hoped that increasing the maximum video length to 10 minutes “would be beneficial for viewers around the world.” Creators unlock more creative possibilities.”

The change could also be TikTok’s way into YouTube. YouTube is the king of long-form videos, and TikTok might want a piece of the pie.

Another possibility is that the company’s demand for long-form video content is on the rise. Aren’t we all? You may also see the creator post a follow-up to the video in the reply section. Or at least see a user request to continue playing the video. TikTok may be trying to eliminate the need for creators to post one video in several sections.

The change could be a way for TikTok to make more money. Longer videos give TikTok more opportunities to display ads.

What does this change mean for TikTok?

9124e9fc7d4caade0cc18362495c2377This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Longer videos can provide viewers with more substantial content. On the other hand, they might make the application less unique. How this change will affect TikTok remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a major shift for the platform. Only time will tell if it succeeds.
